The Fortune Teller WIP

Yes, there is progress it is just slow at this point.  Still trying to get things blocked in and get underpainting ready to do some glazing.  Will try tomorrow to get the rest of the dress blocked in and then I can begin to get the upper layers coming together.  I still keep fussing with her eyes as I don't think I accurately got the exact likeness, but you know, I think it is good enough.

I want to thank Helen Eaton for lots of her precious time and help as she was guiding me through setting up an Etsy shop.   Each year for the last couple I have tried an online platform for selling, first Daily Paintworks, then FASO and now, this year, Etsy.  I did pretty well at first on Daily Paintworks, but then it fell off when I tried to increase pricing a bit.  On FASO I never really got traction as it is a pro site and, well, let's face it, I am not a pro.  Etsy is a pretty economical place to sell and I am hoping to unload some of my smaller paintings.   I would rather do that then have them sit in the closet or throw them out for the garbage man.   The only thing that concerns me is that most of the art out on that platform is prints and they sell super cheap.  I am not sure I want to invest in the printer to do those, and you almost have to do your own prints in order to have control of colors and offer quick service.

I really think the driver behind that is just wanting to get some exposure and validation.  I think that is what we all would like, just for someone to appreciate what we are putting into our work.

So I am also going to look into Artfinder, Saatchi and Ugallery to see if I could sell higher end or larger paintings out there for more like the pricing they recommend.  Saw a great video about how to price from Stefan Baumann who said bare minimum pricing for emerging artists should be $2/sq inch and then increase .25/sq inch each year.  Well Etsy is well below that if you want to sell anything but am going to check out the folks who are selling for more bucks and see how their pricing compares to that.

One thing though that I am trying to figure out is SEO, keywords, descriptions etc.  So still have much studying from people who are successful to figure out how to extend reach.

Oh man, the things you see.  Was just sitting here and looking at the fat arm this gypsy has - thankfully Acrylic covers many sins!!

HAHAHA, glad you saw that. ;) I think her eyes and expression are terrific. Thanks for sharing your opinions and observations. Yeah, pricing, SEO, hashtags... all that. SO much to learn. Wish you well Nelvia :)

The eyes look perfect to me, and yes ok the arm....but she is going to be a stunner , love the head band and the way you painted it. So detailed and beautiful !

I am so glad you caught the arm Nelvia - my first thought was that she was a body builder too - lol. Good luck with your Etsy shop. It is so hard to sell art even with all the on-line opportunities. Your fortune teller is looking good!

Bold Ok, for today's portrait I went out of the box and decided to try a different look and approach. This is on watercolor paper, I applied a layer of paper collate over it (you can see that some of it started lifting - so got to use more medium to glue it next time)  Anyway then I tried to leave part of that under collage showing, even in the face.  Went back in and applied several more light lawyers of transparent and opaque paint and then put in the hair using my dagger bus.   Gosh that brush makes hair so much easier While this might not the best example what are your thoughts to taking portraits this more dynamic direction? Her Highness mixed media woman portrait

Her Highness   I just absolutely loved the expression on this lady and knew I wanted to try to capture her elegance and serenity.  I knew that I didn't want an exact portrait and decided to try another mixed media piece.    I added blobs of paint and used my large scraper to make the areas of color.  Just put paint on a piece of watercolor paper.  Then I inscribed and mixed the colors together with the end of my brush and got all the wavy lines (in real life they actually stand up so there is a 3D effect to the background).  Where I thought I wanted the face I really scraped most of the paint off, and ended up with color blotches and tones, and if you look in the forehead you can sort of see the design that was left.  I thought it would add some variance to the skin tones. I also want to keep her very soft so I tried to stay in the pastel tones, even with the lips.   Once I got shadows and lights added in, and went over it with some skin tone and more blue colors I let

In The Garden acrylic painting Redo

In The Garden Original painting Well, thankfully I have some folks who tell me what they think.  I value their objective opinions very much and appreciate that they feel strongly enough to tell me when they feel something is off.  In the original painting no one liked the addition of the yellow flower, and felt it pulled the eye and overshadowed the focal point.   Well, I sat on it a bit and starting playing with how I could work it back into the composition.  I wanted the third flower, but I couldn't just really dull down the yellow.  As you an see I ended up making it darker in shadows and then burying it into the foliage.  I like it better because it now looks, to me, like it is part of the picture instead of just being put on in the corner.  Moral of the story, fix it first because it is hard to come in and match colors later.
