Poster Update & What Color is Daylight by the hour??

The limited color palette experiment continues, here is a quick update on my poster, latest adds is getting the skin tones in and trying to get the shadow variances with bluer skin tones.  I have to say that I have been pretty true to the original palette with the exception of adding the Black and Burnt Sienna, all colors have been mixed from my six hues.  My main workhorses have been Cad Yellow Med, Grumbacher Red and Ultramarine Blue.
Seems like I do a lot of patting in and glazing with this acrylic to try to get the blended coloration in.  Nancy Goldman (be sure to checkout Nancy's blog, not only wonderful coastal pictures but she works on a unique paper, terraskin,  http://nancygoldmanart.blogspot.com) suggested using a retarder so there is longer drying time, will have to get and try it.
Hubby saw this the other day, (talk about taking the horse to water and making him drink) but gave it the thumbs up and liked it!!!! Eureka, got to get this done as the date to give is in a couple of days.  So up very early this morning and going to have a painting marathon day.

                                                          WHAT COLOR IS DAYLIGHT?

On a clear day natural light will move from warm in the morning to cool in the evening.  Modify your local color to more clearly depict the time of the day (what does that mean?  if you wanted to paint a tree in early morning, modify the greens with tones of yellow.  Or, you could paint the color of light at the time you wanted to depict and just add enough local color, for the tree green, to indicate the true color of the subject)

Morning to Midday
moves from LEMON YELLOW + WHITE (for LEMON YELLOW I have substituted CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT)
CADMIUM YELLOW MEDIUM
CADMIUM YELLOW DEEP (this already is a yellow orange and could be made using the CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT AND GRUMBACHER RED, this makes a yellowish-orange color)

Midday to Evening Light
CADMIUM YELLOW MEDIUM + GRUMBACHER RED
GRUMBACHER RED (I am using this instead of Cadium Red)

Evening Light
QUINACRIDONE RED (I have substituted ALIZARIN CRIMSION here)
DIOXAZINE PURPLE (this is a staple of Jerry Yarnell who does landscapes, it works great in greens and creating darks without using blacks)
ULTRAMARINE BLUE

Midnight
BLACK

Additional daylight changes to think about, it is always changing, even on non-sunny days, with the biggest changes at noon and just past five o'clock.  On sunny days early morning light is very yellow and looks clear and refreshing.  Once you get toward noon, the light takes on a YELLOW OCHRE tone - but keep it light in value because the colors are bleached out by the overhead intense sun.  As afternoon light develops, the YELLOW OCHRE darkens and then progressively changes to ORANGE, ORANGE-RED and then to RED as sunset approaches.  Evening moves into PURPLES and PURPLE-BLUE, BLUE-BLACK AND FINALLY BLACK.

Coming up I'll talk about greens - remember all this information is coming from a wonderful book on Color Harmony - a couple more keys things tht I think are gems to come.

Thanks for stopping by and hope you are having a great weekend.

Thanks for mentioning me on your blog Nelvia. All of this info on color is really interesting. I think I'm going to get the book you've been reading.

Unlisted in 1972, but I often find these books to be more informative, at least,to me. Amazon has for a reasonable price, am adding to my library. Glad it was ok, I should have checked with your first, but just wanted everyone to enjoy your strengths.
