Sky Hole - Day 2 in 30 Day Challenge

                                                                       Sky Hole
                                                                          6"x9"
                                                                Acrylic on Canvas

A few years ago we went to the Grand Canyon and southern Utah, and this Eastern girl fell in love.  It is such a different landscape and the rock formations are just awesome.  This shot is from the Valley of Fire and is of a natural arch.  The colors blew me away in person and even now when I go back to a photo I am taken back by the vivid tones, shapes and colors.
This is one of my experiments and am doing a couple more during this challenge.  It is done in two steps:  1)  paint with modeling paste and 2) add paint for color.  I used the trusty palette knife to get the modeling paste down and try to score it and give some direction.  Then putting on the acrylic was interesting because I had to get the paint into the cracks and crevices.  This definitely is a "touch me" picture.
We really could use some of this nice sunny day as all we have had is rain is clouds.  Hope you had a super New Year and are enjoying the weekend.

I like how you are creating some experiments within your challenge. This is a wonderful piece, and I'll bet the photo doesn't do it justice with all that texture it actually has...
Very cool! Did you happen to notice that there is a face in the rocks on the right of the painting? He seems to be looking to the sky - maybe wishing for some of that rain you are having - lol

What a great experiment. What kind of modeling paste did you use?

I also love this part of the country. Those orange cliffs against the blue sky uses my favorite complementary color scheme.
